On June 16, 2025, the Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC) proudly celebrated its ninth anniversary—a moment made even more meaningful as it coincided with the birthday of its founder, Prof. Dr. Ir. Purnomo Yusgiantoro, M.Sc., M.A., born in Semarang on June 16, 1951.
The name Purnomo Yusgiantoro is synonymous with a lifelong dedication to energy, defense, and education. More than just a seasoned policymaker, he is a respected academic, educator, and strategic thinker whose legacy spans vital sectors of Indonesia’s national development.
From Academia to Ministerial Leadership
Purnomo’s journey began in the academic and consultancy world. He graduated in petroleum engineering from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) before pursuing higher education abroad, obtaining three prestigious degrees: Master of Science (Engineering) – Colorado School of Mines, Master of Arts (Economics) – University of Colorado and Ph.D. in Mineral Economics – Colorado School of Mines
With this solid academic foundation, he emerged as one of Indonesia’s foremost energy experts. His expertise led him to teach energy economics at ITB and serve in strategic roles including OPEC Governor, before taking on ministerial duties.
He served as Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (2000–2009) and later as Minister of Defense (2009–2014) under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s administration, shaping national policy at critical junctures in both sectors.
Returning to Serve with President Prabowo
On October 22, 2024, President Prabowo Subianto appointed Purnomo as Special Presidential Advisor for Energy, reaffirming national trust in his unmatched capability and experience. This appointment marked his return to policy-making in an era where energy remains a global and national challenge.
Founding the University of Defense and PYC
Driven by a passion for knowledge and sustainable contribution, Purnomo has founded two lasting educational institutions:
