indonesiabrief.com/ — Korea Water Resources Corporation, Indonesia’s ‘Karian Metropolitan Waterworks Project’ Commencement Ceremony

EPC contract was completed along with the commencement ceremony for the Karian Metropolitan Waterworks Project in Jakarta, Indonesia.

An EPC contract refers to a lump-sum contract for Engineering (design), Procurement, and Construction.

This commencement ceremony was attended by approximately 70 people including the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works, the Korean Embassy in Indonesia, financial institutions such as the Export-Import Bank of Korea, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the EPC contract partner, the GS Engineering & Construction Consortium.

The Karian Metropolitan Waterworks Project is the first project financing (PF) project in the Indonesian water sector, with a scale of approximately 3.4 trillion rupiah (approximately 300 billion won).

Accordingly, it is planned to supply approximately 400,000㎥ of clean and safe drinking water per day to approximately 2 million people in Jakarta and nearby cities, which are suffering from high groundwater dependency and water quality issues.

This EPC contract is a follow-up procedure to the ‘Karian-Serpong Metropolitan Waterworks Public-Private Partnership’ contract signed between PT.KWS, an Indonesian local corporation established by Korea Water Resources Corporation to carry out the project in 2021, and the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works, and is a key procedure for the implementation of the Karian Metropolitan Waterworks Project.

In May, Korea Water Resources Corporation signed a commitment to provide funds for the Karian Metropolitan Waterworks Project with financial institutions including the Export-Import Bank of Korea, the Asian Development Bank, and the International Finance Corporation.

Once the follow-up procedures for this contract are completed, the Karian Metropolitan Waterworks Project is expected to begin construction in earnest in the first half of next year.

Ahn Jeong-ho, head of the Green Infrastructure Division at Korea Water Resources Corporation, said, “It is meaningful that we have entered the Indonesian water market, which has many business opportunities in the water infrastructure sector due to capital relocation, as One Team Korea,” adding.

“We will smoothly promote the project and use it as a bridgehead for strengthening cooperation between the two countries, while contributing to raising Korea’s international status in the global water market.”

Ismeth Wibowo, Senior Advisor at K-water in Indonesia, Welcomes Korean Investment in Renewable Energy and Clean Water Supply Projects

Ismeth Wibowo, Senior Advisor at K-water in Indonesia, has expressed strong support for South Korea’s investment in Indonesia’s renewable energy and clean water sectors. He emphasized that these investments are crucial to driving sustainable development and meeting the growing demand for environmentally friendly energy solutions in Indonesia.

“This move is part of a broader strategy to support sustainable development and fulfill Indonesia’s need for eco-friendly energy,” said Ismeth Wibowo. “The projects will also bring significant benefits to the Indonesian people, enhancing both the quality of life and economic development in the country.”

Wibowo’s comments come as South Korea’s involvement in Indonesia’s energy transition and water infrastructure projects continues to grow. The collaboration is seen as an important step toward achieving Indonesia’s long-term goals for green energy and clean water access for its population.
